OSCAR PREDICTIONS

What a strange year it has been!  I haven’t been able to write movie reviews since chipping a bone in my elbow.  I hope to be back into doing them once I’ve healed.  I didn’t get to review “The Outfit” (highly recommend with an Oscar-worthy performance by Mark Rylance) and “The Lost City” (entertaining fluff with Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock, and Brad Pitt).  Anyway, even though they’ll have to be pretty short, I am getting on with the predictions.

I am usually super confident about my choices, but this year is a big exception.  If I get a few of these right, I will be happy.  I was not able to see many of the nominated movies because of limited runs and exclusive streaming rights.  Anyway, the following are what I think will win, not who I think should win.

PICTURE:   The Power of the Dog  (Coda would not be a surprise)

DIRECTOR:  Jane Campion (nailed it)

ACTRESS:  Jessica Chastain (nailed it)

ACTOR:  Will Smith (nailed it)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  Ariana DeBose (nailed it)

SUPPORTING ACTOR:  Troy Koster (nailed it)

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:  Belfast (nailed it)

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:  The Power of the Dog

ANIMATED FEATURE:  Encanto (nailed it)

ORIGINAL SONG:  Dos Oruguitas

ORIGINAL SCORE:  Dune (nailed it)

 

SO THIS YEAR MY SCORE WAS 8 OUT OF 11  —  NOT BAD FOR THIS CRAZY YEAR!!

OSCAR PREDICTIONS

Well it is that time of year again!  Who will take  home a coveted Oscar?  Who will give the best acceptance speech?  Who will read out the wrong winner?  We will find out the answers to all of these questions (and the plain old ‘best’ awards themselves) on February 24th.  As a full-fledged Oscar nerd, I am ready to make my picks for this years’ winners.  This is the first year in a long time that I am not confident in all my picks.  There a lot of tight races, and I think there will be several upsets.  Be that as it may. here is my list of who I think will win (not necessarily who I want to win)

BEST ACTOR:  Rami Malek

BEST ACTRESS:  Glen Close

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:  Mahershala Ali

BEST SUPPORT ACTRESS:  Regina King

BEST DIRECTOR:  Alfonso Curan

BEST PICTURE:  Green Book (I am the least confident with this one)

BEST SONG:  Shallow

BEST ORIGINAL SCREEN PLAY: Green Book

BEST ADAPTED SCREEN PLAY:  BlackKklansman

BEST ANIMATED MOVE:  Into the Spiderverse

POSTSCRIPT:  Yay for me!  I got 9 out of ten correct.  The only one I missed was Olivia Coleman winning best actress.  This was well-deserved but a surprise none-the-less!

Everyone who knows me, knows I LOVE movies.  I have been watching the yearly Academy Awards since I was five.  Well, I didn’t watch but would stay up listening in my room while I was supposed to be asleep.   Since my teens, I have been predicting the winners in the main categories.  I usually do a pretty good job if I do say so myself.  The following predictions are not necessarily who I think should win, just who I think will win.  Here we go……

BEST PICTURE:  La La Land will get this one.  I have seen most of the best pictures, and this one is the most original of the bunch.

BEST DIRECTOR:  Damien Chazellle for La La Land

BEST ACTRESS:  Emma Stone

BEST ACTOR:  This is a hard one to predict.  I believe Viggo Mortensen has an outside chance, but I think it might go to Denzel Washington.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  Viola Davis

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:  Mahershala Ali

BEST ANIMATED MOVIE:  Zootopia

ORIGINAL SONG:  City of Stars from La La Land

ORIGINAL SCORE:  La La Land
