Movie reviews from a middle school teacher's perspective

A WHOLE LOTTA MOVIES

Apple Rating:

It has been quite a summer! Even though I have been busy taking trips (one to Vermont and one to Disney World), I still found time to see movies. So here it goes, a whole bunch of reviews in the order that I liked the movies.

FREE GUY – This is my favorite movie in this group. It is mindless fun and I really enjoyed it. Ryan Reynolds (the Deadpool guy) stars as a wimpy bank teller who discovers he is actually a background character in a video game. His journey to rise above his coding and gain control of his own life is funny and entertaining. Reynold has a great supporting cast; including Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi and Lil Rel Howery (and Joe Keery from Stranger Things). Watch for couple of very funny short cameos!

STILLWATER: Now for something completely different. Matt Damon is a down on his luck oil rig worker who travels to Marseille, France to visit his daughter, who is serving time in prison for murder. She claims innocence and while he had been an indifferent failue as a dad, he supports her all the way. He spends a lot of time in Marseille proving her innocence, and connects with a single mom and her daughter. Things get rather complex. It’s a very different role for Damon, and he pulls it off well. The setting is in the seedier side of town, and gives an interesting perspective quite different from the more touristy environs of many movies. If you were expecting a Liam Neesem “Taken” story with a happy ending, this may not be the movie for you. However, if you want to see top level acting and something to make you think, you might want to check this out.

THE PROTEGE: This one reminded me a little bit of Atomic Blond. It stars Maggie Q as Anna and Samuel L. Jackson as Moody, a paid assassin. Anna is his protege. But they have no particular political or criminal agenda and only go after people who deserve it. You can plainly see in the trailors that Moody is murdered and Anna must bring the killers to justice. Ah ah ah, not so fast. Be ready for a few twists. And look for Michael Keaton in a role as a somewhat honorable, if unmerciful, professional of his own. If you love Samuel L. Jackson (and I do) you will not think you wasted your time watching this one.

SUICIDE SQUAD: I apologize ahead of time to all the Suicide Squad fans out there. The first movie was okay, but this one didn’t do a thing for me. I didn’t find it funny, thought the Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn tiresome, and the plot weak, confused even. We watched it on television, and felt we wasted a few hours (though at least we didn’t waste our money on movie tickets). I guess if you love the first one; you will enjoy this one, but honestly, there are other movies out there worth more of a view.

Once Upon a Time…..In Hollywood

August 6, 2019 By Adnerb Leave a Comment

Apple Rating:

Wow! Another great movie from quirky writer/director Quentin Tarantino.  ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ takes place in 1969 Los Angles, which is changing from the apple pie, Ozzie and Harriet world of the 1950’s to the era of Woodstock and hippies.  In the middle of this wave of change is TV cowboy star Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in one of the best performances of his career.  Dalton is confused by these changes, which see his appeal and marketability shrink.  But even though he is reduced to starring in Spaghetti Westerns, he is still committed to his career and gives each performance his all, including all the booze he can manage.  He is helped out by his stunt double/gofer/friend Cliff Booth, played of course by Brad Pitt in another career highlight performance.  The writing for these two characters is so crisp and Tarantino really fleshes them out in such a way that by the end of the movie, you not only like them, but feel like you really know them.  Since the Sharon Tate murder plays a big part of the story, it is helpful to read a little bit about if you are not familiar with Charles Manson or his followers.  Everything that you love about Quentin Tarantino movies can be found here:  witty dialogue, character development, multiple story lines, revisionist history, and a plethora of supporting/cameo appearances.  The one big hallmark of Tarantino that you won’t find though is excessive, gory violence.  Don’t get me wrong, there is violence in this movie, but it is more restrained than in any of his past movies.  I also loved how 1969 was recreated.  The small details are spot on, even down to the way Taco Bell looked when I got my first job there selling tacos and burritos.  If you are looking for a quirky, thought-provoking movie with Oscar caliber writing and performances, this is the movie for you!! Just remember, it’s “once upon a time…in Hollywood.”

Mary, Queen of Scots

December 24, 2018 By Adnerb Leave a Comment

Apple Rating:

This is the second “queenly” movie I have seen in as many weeks, the previous being “The Favorite.”  Both movies depict an era of history that I am very fond of.  I really wanted to love these movies, but they both let me down. ” The Favorite” was a way better movie, but I really don’t recommend either one.  I found “Mary, Queen of Scots” to be very boring, which is not easy to do with all of the rich history that occured in this time period.   Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie do a pretty good job of depicting these two great, regal cousins.  The historical events are basically accurate, with the exception of a very contrived meeting, that never occured!  (the director and writer say there could have been a secret meeting.  Not very likely in an era when monarchs were accompanied at all times and their courts knew where they were.)  The meeting was given a rather modern and nonsensical cast and really begged the issue of the rift between the two queens.  In the movie, Mary and Elizabeth have this secret meeting that leads Elizabeth once and for all to lock up her cousin, who shows a remarkable lack of acumen for a woman who otherwise was a worldly and intelligent monarch.  There was of course alot more to the rift that ended with the execution of Mary Stewart!   Mary became Queen of Scotland when she was six days old due to the death of her father, but spent her formative years in France, where she eventually married the Dauphin.  When he died, she returned to rule Scotland as an adult – yet in the movie, she has a thick Scottish brogue!  I won’t go into the details of her history with her cousin. Elizabeth, and her Scots nobility.  It’s a very complex and murky story, with many plots and intrigues afoot, including some poor choices made by Mary herself.  The movie depicts some of these, but in a confusing way that manages to make them seem uninteresting.  The murder of her private secretary was dramatic and intense, as were several depictions of skirmishes.   I think if you were not familiar with many of the events in this story, you might be confused as to the reasons for some occurances, like the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley.  Just too much is not effectively explained or fleshed out.  The costume designer might have done a better job with less leather and inaacurate hair stying.  Look for a few surprises though, David Tennant and Guy Pearce are very effective as John Knox and Sir William Cecil.  Both had make up that was so well-done I didn’t recongize either of them.  Maybe they preferred it that way…  I enjoyed Margot Robbie’s performance as Queen Elizabeth, but her time on screen was comparatively brief.  If you know absolutely nothing about Mary, Queen of Scots, this movie will at least introduce you to the basic facts of her rule and her tragic death.  Otherwise, you would probably be better served by reading a good biography.

I, Tonya

January 27, 2018 By Adnerb Leave a Comment

Apple Rating:

Director Craig Gillespie uses a fake documentary style to illustrate the Tonya Harding story that I quite enjoyed.  There are mock  interviews with a variety of people who played a part in her life.   Margot Robbie’s Tonya Harding is a tough-as-nails skater whose horrible childhood feeds her competitive nature.  Allison Janney plays her mother in one of the great supporting performances as an abusive mother who abysmally maltreats her daughter, then has the audacity to declare she should be thanked for giving her the drive to succeed.  For those of you unfamiliar with Tonya Harding, the basic plot line leads up to the time that her ex husband hired someone to break Nancy Kerrigan’s knee, thus allowing Tonya to have a better shot at an Olympic medal.  Poor Tonya was used and abused by family, husband, and even Olympic judges.  I came away with a new respect for Margot Robbie’s acting talents as well as Tonya Harding herself.  If  you are interested in the world of figure skating or have always wondered about this dark event in Olympic history, I recommend you check out this movie.

Suicide Squad

August 14, 2016 By Adnerb Leave a Comment

Apple Rating:

If you are looking for a movie with a deep plot and Oscar caliber performances, go see Captain Fantastic.  However, if you want to see a truck load of bizarre characters kicking butt with lots of explosions and a dash of humor, this the movie you have been waiting for.  It was nice to see Will Smith back in a watchable movie playing  a  “heartless” assassin, a role that  suits him well.  Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are dementedly twisted as devoted lovers who just can’t keep away from each other.  The biggest surprise for me was Viola Davis as a tough government official who has an intriguing and pretty far out plan to protect the planet.  The plot is very simplistic and you will probably see the ending coming from a mile away, but who cares?  This was my last day of freedom before I go back to teaching and this movie was the perfect way to end the summer with a mindless BANG!  By the way, if you go, stay until about half way through the credits for a little preview of the next Batman movie with Ben Affleck.
